Special treats.......

.........for special neighbors.

Like neighbors who fix our lamps , or neighbors who let our child follow them around their garage all day and also fish Aidan's toys out of the storm drain that happens to be right in front of our house.

I found the recipe here. Super easy, yummy treat.

A little late

Saint Patricks day at our house.
Everything we ate with or on was green as was most of the food.

We even made green ketchup.

My kid is crazy over green.

Finally! A Field Trip!

That's right! We finally made it on a field trip! Can you believe it! It only took all year.

I figured our chances were pretty good considering he finished his antibiotics the night before the field trip. We also were going to celebrate Aidan's birthday at school on Thursday, however on Wednesday I was just swiping my card at the gym when I received a phone call from school.
That's right, fever, headache, stomach ache, strep. So.......... no birthday party until after spring break and lots and lots of tears at our house. (He made me cry too.) But I think he will finish this bottle of Amoxicillin right before he finishes up spring break, so we should be safe! I am really glad we never bought tickets to go anywhere on break, because even as I write this he is downstairs taking an almost 4 hour nap. Anyway, this post was not to lament over his constant illness and my subsequent lack of a social life, but to talk about his field trip.

I rode the bus. I almost hurled. Yes I had to sit in front on the way home and put my head by the window. Maybe I won't be going on any more field trips.

We spent a few hours at Underwater Adventures at the Mall of America. Seriously, I could barely keep track of the four students assigned to me, I don't know how his teacher does it every day. She does a great job with them, and I am finding it is really fun to be a volunteer parent. I love this time in our life.

I bought myself flowers too

No, I am not copying Ali.

We just must both have spring fever.

We have had some nice weather and some sick kids which means everyone else is out enjoying the fresh air and we are stuck inside.

Thus the flowers.

Makes sense to me!

Liberty for all

We have a friend who works at Target corporate and last week when we were there for dinner he was talking to us about the new Liberty of London line at Target. I was grumbling that the Targets here have pretty much sold out of the line and I was lamenting I wasn't able to pick up more items because I love them! He did reassure that they would be sending out more shipments soon, and he gave me a heads up that there will be some other awesome designers featuring their lines at Target, and I should stay tuned. He wasn't allowed to share many details, but he said to save my pennies for this fall because............. and that is all I can say on that - so save your pennies ladies, because I hear it is going to be good.

Anyway, last Sunday after yoga and before church I squeezed in a quick trip to a Target that I don't normally go to.

Success.

And it is a good thing that my time was limited or I may have really gotten carried away, because it was all so beautiful and springy.

I picked up a super cute summer dress and a lampshade. Now I am just going to have to
hit my neighbor up to fix another lamp for me.

Date Night Part II

Yes- his date finally came and she taught us how to make Chinese dumplings.
Aidan has been telling me for months that "Making dumplings is so easy Mom! You just need flour, water, vegetables and meat!" I didn't really believe him. However, I learned they are just.that.easy.
As a matter of fact, he is requesting to make them this week with my parents for his birthday dinner.
Originally the plan for the evening was that the two of them were going to go out for ice cream, (remember - this all started when Aidan made her a bracelet) but James and I tagged along because we decided to all go to a movie. The movie ended up being sold out so we went back to our house and played the Wii.
Now Aidan has two people he can actually beat, me and her.
We had lots of fun. Thanks Fang Laoshi for the yummy dumpling lesson!

His first date

Waiting for her to show up.
Dressed in his favorite "skateboarder" outfit.
Thoroughly doused in cologne.
He had to wait, so should you.
Check back.

Dreams

What do you dream about?

I dream about things like this.

I know I am weird.

However if you are weird like me you may enjoy watching these video's on You Tube.

Last I checked I was still dreaming. That is still my faithful Kitchenaid blender on the counter.
No, you don't need to rub your eyes. You are seeing clearly. Yes, that is me. I just rolled out of bed and I was making a green smoothie for breakfast. Jane bought that blender for me at Christmas a few years ago and I still have it. Sometimes I make the motor smoke, but it is still working!

Back to the green smoothies, we have all been drinking them. Poor Aidan. I have been practically pouring them down his throat along with his daily vitamins.

Because I also dream about how amazing it would be to make it through a month without a sick child.

I mean, I love all the extra snuggles and time at home, but I miss getting out and doing things.
Right now he is getting over strep again. And we are continuing our healthy green smoothies and breakfast and hopefully next month we will have a better report.

And speaking of dreams.........I hear Blendtec is at Costco this week.
Gotta Go.

Late again

Two weeks ago Aidan had some time off school and my Dad was scheduled to be in Iowa so we met in Fort Dodge and spent some time with the Grandma's. I failed to take very many pictures.... but the ones I did take are priceless.

Here we are playing a fast paced game of tic-tac-toe.

Yep- that's how my Dad was dressed.

We had some "craft time" too.

And as you can see, I get my creativity from both sides of the family. (To be fair the only reason my Dad is weaving a bracelet is because we bet him he couldn't) Apparently my competitiveness runs in the family too.

And here is Aidan with a bracelet he made for his teacher. He is learning fast that women respond to jewelry, because upon receiving the bracelet, she offered to take him out on a date and get some ice cream.

Smart kid!

"Green Day."

If you have followed my blog over the years you might remember that Saint Patrick's Day is very important at our house. No, not because we are Irish or Catholic or anything like that - but because green is Aidan's favorite color. Actually let me rephrase that. Aidan is a freak about green. And I would be lying if I didn't confess that another highlight of the month is the Shamrock shakes at McDonald's. (If you are interested you can find lasts years post here along with the pictures of Aidan and I and the green wigs.)

Today we have big plans. We are going to get a Shamrock shake and then Aidan will eat green food for dinner off of green plates and he will use green utensils, straws and glasses. (Oh - and his room is green, I am sure he will wear green clothes, and we also have lots of green toys around our house as well. We have green all year 'round at our house because he just can't get enough!) I also made some cookies with green M & M's for the occasion, but sadly I can't send them to school with him to share with the other kids because there are all sorts of rules about homemade food at school. So James and I will both take some to work. I have been trying to "Eat to Live" the last few weeks, so I made some adjustments to my regular cookie recipe to make them a little healthier. They taste great but the flax seeds seem to get stuck in your teeth.

(Oh, and back to the book "Eat to Live" - I may blog about it later. It isn't just supposed to be a diet but a lifestyle choice and I have recently been making some changes because Aidan has been sick so much. So let me try it for a few weeks and I will get back to you.)

In the meantime my "healthier" chocolate chip cookie recipe. Enjoy! (Don't worry, nothing beats shortening in a cookie, so I haven't totally gone off the deep end!)

Chocolate Chip Cookies

1 Cup shortening

2 cups flax seed meal

3 eggs

1 cup brown rice syrup

1 cup brown sugar

2 tsp vanilla

1 tsp sea salt

1 tsp baking soda

2 cups white flour

2 cups whole wheat flour

1 bag chocolate chips

Mix well. Bake at 350 for 10 minutes.

Giveaway!

Not mine- but if you click here you can find out how to win.
I have seen her stuff at I Like You, so it was so fun to read a little more about her.
And you will love the blog she is featured on. I know I do.

For Honey Bear

Here is a little message for Grandma Jordison, a.k.a Honey Bear. She is in a hospital out in Colorado right now and unlike previous years when we could just pack up and go, someone has school, so instead we are sending her a little message.

We love you Grandma, hope you are able to come home soon.

XOXO
And yes, I know it is sideways. Just tilt your head and watch it, and when it is finished tilt to the other side for a few seconds so you can have some balanced stretching.

These are my favorite bowls, and they go with everything. The best part is they are only $4.00 each so you can slowly gather your collection.

Speaking of collections, I love hers. (you have to scroll down for the picture)

Organizational Tip of the Week

Now that he is a bona fide Kindergartner Aidan brings my shopping trips to a whole new level of organization - and I am embarrassed to say this - but his handwriting is much more legible than mine, making the trip just that much easier.

Pure heaven in my mailbox

Don't tell James, but when catalogs like this one
arrive in my mailbox, I want to quit my job, move to the country and grow things.

I enjoyed the CSA last year and am currently debating if I am going to go for it again.. I feel like we wasted quite a bit of food, but then we also ate very healthy, even with the waste.

I am debating pulling out one of my flowerbeds and putting a veggie garden there....... but that would require some sort of privacy fence. (Don't ask questions because I am trying to be polite. Just trust me, it would.) We had little gardens last year but I never really committed myself to them, maybe because I knew I would be picking up a massive box of veggies every Thursday. So maybe this year will be the year of the Kahl garden? Maybe if I can get all the Kahl's living in our house on board and committed to help we could actually make some progress. What do you think James, should we go for it?

So while I am trying to decide what to do I will just ogle catalogs like this one.

What about you? Growing anything this year?

I think I *like* you

I feel like I may be rushing into things- but usually after one application of a new make-up every pore in my face has clogged up.
But not this week.
It also may have something to do with the fact that I am using this to wash my face with twice daily. My neighbor recommended it to me, and holy cow I have seen a tangible change. So much so that I am debating becoming a distributor.
Yes, I did just say that, I know it is crazy.

But it seems too crazy to be real - just a washcloth and water? I have to say though that this is the first winter since I was pregnant that I haven't battled dry peeling skin and zits. Maybe I am just outgrowing it.... but somehow I think it is a direct result of the facewashing.
So there - my two shameless plugs. But hey- if you are anything like me then you have contributed to overcrowded landfills with all the products tried and discarded over the years.
So tell me what you think. Anyone else try any of the above?

How to have a picnic in the winter

First spread a cheerful blanket on the floor and light a campfire.

Then order Jimmy John's Delivery so each person can have the sandwich of their choice, and that way Mom can have Jalapeno chips.

(A very rare treat indeed, my mouth is watering even as I type this but sadly there are no chips in our house!)

Have some good entertainment like the Picnic game.

And make sure you line up some good company for the evening too. (James is here too, somehow he just isn't in a single picture)

And that is how you have a picnic in the winter.

Easter?

I packed up Valentines Day decorations..... time to move on to the next season.

I am loving decorating my grey living room for the different seasons. For some reason the sun seems so much sunnier in the grey room as opposed to how it looked in the red. I was never able to take naturally lit pictures in the red room and they seem to work so well now. So please humor me as I continue to post them!

(Note Aidan's Red Chinese New Year lantern is still hanging in the corner)

Lamp from my Grandma that my neighbor fixed for me. I think for now I like it best without a shade. I know, I am weird like that.

They look pretty good in natural light too.

Future Nerds Of America

Well, Kind of. Is it okay to call your own child a nerd?

He isn't one yet but he is well on his way. It seems almost every Saturday James finds some sort of science fair for him and Aidan to attend, and the two of them hang out for the day and then come home and tell me about circuits and pulleys and trebuchet's........ all of my favorite subjects.

This last weekend they went to a Mad Science fair at the Edina Community Center and Aidan told me he learned that the Chinese were the first group of people to make paper. Cool, huh? I suppose I should check out Wikipedia to see if he has his facts right, but I need to get this blogpost wrapped up.

Thanks for taking great pictures this time James!
