My mom and her dog are coming for the weekend, so we thought we would spruce up the guest room with some fresh-cut lilacs and hostas. I never noticed all the color variations in the lilacs before. Are they always like this? Or is it because of our cool spring? We have about half the normal amount of lilacs this year, and our cherry trees have half the blossoms as well. I hope that doesn't translate to half the cherries, because we have big plans for them this year!

At least you have lilacs! Ours are hardly blooming yet! Well have fun with your mom and her puppy! How fun!!
The color variations are quite normal. You can also get lilacs that range in color from white, all the way to a very dark purple.
My parents have 50 lilacs with all the variations.
They smell heavenly!
yeah, its weird though, usually the flowers from this bush are just lilac. We have lots of other colors of lilacs in our yard, but i have never noticed this particular plant to vary so much in all the years we have lived here.
