What's for breakfast?

I think I finally have figured out how to make the perfect Greek style homemade yogurt. And what better way to enjoy it in the morning, than with apricots, pistachios and honey. Mmmm.

well - I will do my best. I have found when I use the totally scientific recipe it fails me.

First heat 1/2 gallon whole milk in microwave for 12 minutes or until very hot, but not boiling. let cool until lukewarm. I always skim the "milk skin" off. Then slowly mix in an 8 oz carton plain yogurt, (mix it first to get all the lumps out before you add it to the yogurt. Then keep overnight in your oven with the light on. Wierd, huh? For my oven that light bulb puts off just the right amount of heat. (you need to have a quiet, 118-120 degree place for the yogurt to rest.) Needs to be in there about 10-12 hours. Then.... let cool in fridge, You can eat it this way, or to make Greek style - line a colander with cheesecloth or a dish towel and let strain into a bowl in fridge overnight, until it is thick and creamy like sour cream. super yummy. Takes alot of time, but really isn't too mcuh work. I also have the yogurt maker the Oprah prasied in "Why French women don't get fat." Maybe I could just give you that next time I see you. But if you do try it... let me know how it works. Just remember it doesn't like to be bothered, so no stirring or peaking or anything until it is cooled off in the fridge.

Thanks, sweetie. The recipe is for Barb, not me. There is a big Lebanese community here in Mérida. They make the best yogurt...I buy mine from a little old lady who lives down the street.

You know, to be honest, I was having a hard time imagining you making yogurt. but.... you could procure some of their culture for Barb and I, and then we could make fabulous yogurt too. The way they first brought yogurt culture to America is pretty amazing - they dried a yogurt soaked cloth and then rehydrated it here, after they made it through Ellis island, b/c when the Armenians first tried to bring live culture into the US, the inspectors made them throw it away.More than you wanted to know, I am sure.

Exactly...I was only the messenger for this one. My eyes were rolling as I read the recipe. Considering that I have never opened the door to my oven, I have no idea if it even has a light! How exactly does one procure a culture? Speak English, por favor.

ummmm - old rag dried in yogurt, rehydrated, like the early immigrants. sounds delicious, eh? I was only kidding anyway. can you imagine how that would smell?????

Can you even believe we are having this conversation? Aren't the Olympics on or something?
